Child Window Safety

Child Window safetyRecent string of accidents involving children falling from windows in apartment blocks has led to changes in the National Construction Code. Under the building code changes and amendment of Strata scheme Management Act section 64A, the Australian Government’s new child window safety laws for residential strata buildings commenced since December 2013, all new apartment blocks in Australia are required to have window restrictor locks fitted, preventing windows from opening more than 12.5cm.

The changes have been introduced as a result of an increase in the number of children being injured after falling from open windows in apartment buildings. As research indicates, even if a window of 12.5cm is fitted with a fly screen, a child is still not safe from a potentially deadly fall.
